The infamous LockBit ransomware operators claim to have stolen confidential data belonging to SpaceX in what appears to be a supply chain attack.
As reported by Security Affairs, the group compromised the systems of Maximum Industries, a full-service, one-off and contract manufacturing company that also operates SpaceX.
For the (few) uninitiated, SpaceX is an American spacecraft manufacturer and satellite communications company founded by eccentric billionaire Elon Musk. He gained fame after successfully building rockets that are able to land back on Earth, thus saving the space industry billions of dollars.
Thousands of drawings
Now, according to LockBit, Maximum Industries has been hacked, providing hackers with about 3,000 “drawings certified by SpaceX engineers.”
“I’d say we were lucky if the SPACE-X performers were more talkative. But I think this material will find its buyer as soon as possible,” reads the message on LockBit’s Tor Leak website.
He continued: “Elon Musk we will help you sell your drawings to other manufacturers – build the ship faster and fly away. and now in numbers: around 3,000 drawings certified by space-x engineers.”
LockBit says the data will be auctioned in less than a week in an attempt to extract maximum value from the stolen files. However, it is difficult to determine what the database really contains, as there is no sample, and both SpaceX and Maximum Industries are silent.
LockBit is one of the most popular ransomware programs (opens in a new tab) there variants. In four years of existence, he managed to compromise over 600 companies and post their confidential data on his website. While not all targets are high-profile, LockBit has had some major hits recently, including the Lisbon Port Authority and LA Housing Authority.
