The Air Link feature that allows users to wirelessly connect the Oculus Quest 2 to a computer via Wi-Fi isn’t great, but it’s a lot worse on the Meta Quest Pro. Thankfully, that should all change in the next update, according to the director of Meta Wireless.
If you want to play the best VR games on PC with Meta Quest Pro, you have two options; you can either pay for an Oculus Link cable or connect wirelessly using Air Link or an app like Virtual Desktop.
The latter can work quite well, but you have to admit that it depends a lot on your internet speed as well as your configuration. For best results, you want to have your router, computer, and Quest Pro in the same room. However, for some reason, even though the Pro offers a lot of improvements on the Oculus Quest 2, the wireless connection to the computer has become much worse for some users.
Bruno Cendón, Director of Meta Wireless Network revealed in a tweet that this is a known issue with Meta Quest Pro, but cannot be fixed before launch. This should change in the next Meta Quest Pro software update, and your computer’s wireless connection to Quest Pro should become “as good as Quest 2”.
Known issue but the fix was not ready to run 😔. This will most likely be fixed in the next update and DFS channels will be as good as they were in task 2November 3, 2022
The cause of the problem is related to DFS channels; this is a feature used by Wi-Fi to allow devices to use a wider range of Wi-Fi channels, such as the 5 GHz frequencies that are usually reserved for radar and satellite communications.
According to the creator of Virtual Desktop, Guy Godin, disabling the Wi-Fi router’s DFS channels in the router settings can solve Meta Quest Pro problems. However, this will not be a solution for everyone; not all routers can disable DFS channels, and you might not want to disable them just so your VR headset can perform a little better.
Hopefully Meta will be able to keep to Cendón’s schedule and release a fix in the next update, but at least we now know that Meta is working on fixing the issue and should be on its way soon.
