Great news for fans of Paradox Interactive’s medieval drama simulator: a new free update has just arrived.
The new 1.8.0 update, titled “Robe”, added some new features to the game as well as some improvements and bug fixes. As per tradition with Crusader Kings 3 patches, these changes range from necessary and useful gameplay changes to downright fun bug fixes.
The new patch brings with it a number of new features, including the ability to save and load custom lines, the addition of new and unique illustrations for all game rules, a rework of the tab screen, and 17 new custom faith icons for the game’s religions. However, as you’ll soon discover, there’s a lot more to unpack when it comes to this latest update.
Crusader Kings 3 is a rich narrative strategy game set in the Middle Ages, where players take on the role of great rulers and live their lives at the top of a feudal pyramid, combining strategy with RPG. The lives of the characters in Crusader Kings 3 are incredibly engaging, dramatic, and sometimes a little silly. Simply put, it’s one of the best strategy games on PC, though it’s also available on Xbox Series X|S and PS5.
You’re not my real dad
In addition to the new features, some gameplay balance tweaks have also been made. Most heartbreaking is how Paradox has made it easy for players to disinherit children who are bastards or have a disputed inheritance. In fact, it’s now “free” according to Paradox Forum (opens in a new tab).
Medieval politics is a violent world, so this kind of callously evil parenting is to be expected. However, even among the ruthless maneuvers of the medieval elite, this course of action is seen as a bit excessive. Indeed, you will incur a “global public penalty” if you choose to disown your poor unsuspecting children. It might seem that even for the cruelest tyrant of the Middle Ages, denial of children does not look good.
Since its release in 2020, Crusader Kings 3 has been highly acclaimed by fans and developers alike. Crusader Kings 3 gives you access to a dizzying array of player-created mods, not to mention plenty of DLC, including three full expansions. Although official stuff costs extra, Paradox’s medieval tour de force offers a real rabbit hole for strategy fans and history buffs alike.
Crusader Kings 3 holds a special place in the hearts of gamers because it provides complex, spiraling narratives for its characters. Offering a deep and complex simulation of medieval geopolitics, Paradox has built a machine that produces truly emergent stories that, thanks to player input, are rarely repeated.
While the game generates some fun patch notes, it’s definitely worth a try, especially if you want to get stuck into some big-narrative medieval shenanigans.
