After the most justified complaints from longtime Overwatch players, Blizzard has lowered the prices of old cosmetics.
Release Overwatch 2 saw Blizzard re-release skins and other cosmetic items from the original game. The price of one of these older skins was quite high at 1900 coins – that’s $19 / £16.34 / AU$29.26 per cosmetic. Blizzard has lowered the price after fan complaints, but there’s a catch.
Older Legendary skins now cost 1,000 Coins, $10 / £8.60 / AU$15.40, but only if you buy them with Coins earned in the original game, so new players can’t enjoy these price reductions.
This deal comes with further caveats, as the price cut only applies to non-event Legendary skins (try saying that quickly and without tripping). So you’ll have to pay the original price if you want to get some old Christmas skins in time for the holidays.
One step forward
Since the release of Overwatch 2, the new store has been controversial. While skins and items from the previous game are available, buying them all will cost over $10,000. Many of these items were available for free in the original game. This change to legacy skins and credits is a much needed step in the right direction.
While it’s not the same as getting skins for free like in the first game, it’s at least a little cheaper. This not only shows that Blizzard is listening to player recommendations and complaints, but it also rewards longtime players who saved up their credits – when Overwatch 2 launched, money earned in the original game carried over to the sequel, but it wasn’t worth as much as fresh coins. Offering older prices, it eliminates the need to buy cosmetics that used to be available for free.
Limited contract
Blizzard has not indicated that this is a limited-time offer. Hopefully this will be a permanent change to the store. However, older loans are unfortunately limited. Since they were only obtainable in the original Overwatch, there is no way to save older credits now that the game has been discontinued.
The only other option to save Overwatch 2 credits and get classic skins for free is to earn coins by completing weekly challenges. With a maximum stake of 60 coins per week, you will be able to purchase all older skins [checks notes] 327 years.
This is not a huge step forward, it will not save 35 million Overwatch 2 players (opens in a new tab) a lot of money, but at least it makes the pain of $19 skin prices a little less painful.
