At the launch of the Google Pixel 7, Google Pixel 7 Pro and Google Pixel Watch, we heard nothing official about the Google Pixel Fold – but as the new leak shows, the foldable phone made by Google is clearly visible.
People from 91 cell phones (opens in a new tab) – who are accurate in their predictions more often than not – have managed to access several foldable specs, including information about the size and shape of the device, as well as some details about the display and camera.
The screen panels are apparently ordered from Samsung (according to earlier rumors) and will operate at a resolution of 2208 x 1840. The display is expected to offer an average brightness of 800 nits, a maximum brightness of 1200 nits and a refresh rate that can go up to 120 Hz. Meanwhile, the overall dimensions of the unfolded device are reported to be 123 mm x 148 mm.
Sensor specification
For cameras, and it is said that Pixel Fold boasts a rear camera consisting of the main Sony IMX787 (64MP) telephoto lens, IMX386 (12.2MP) and the S5K3J1 (10MP) telephoto lens. The internal display camera reportedly uses a Sony IMX355 (8MP) sensor with a S5K3J1 (10MP) sensor on the external display.
Some of these sensor specs have been mentioned before, but as we get closer to the Pixel Fold launch, details start to emerge from several sources – which obviously increases the likelihood that they are actually accurate.
Speaking of launch, it is widely expected that the foldable phone will make its debut at some point in 2023 (following initial rumors for 2022). As always, the price will be crucial and is expected to be somewhere around $ 1,400 (around £ 1,255 / AU $ 2,260).
Analysis: This foldable becomes the center of attention
We heard that Google has been working on a foldable phone for a long time (though we’re not in Apple Car territory in terms of longevity). Given the frequency of leaks we’re hearing now, it feels like the premiere is getting closer.
The signs are promising: with the Galaxy Z Fold 4, Samsung has achieved the fourth iteration of its flagship foldable phone, so it knows what it is doing in terms of displays. There’s also an emerging Pixel hardware line that shows that the company is serious about increasing the number of devices it has to offer.
While folding phones are not popular these days, they are slowly becoming an increasingly common sight – and as prices continue to fall as technology gets cheaper, this trend will only go in one direction. This seems like the right time for Google to get involved and give Pixel fans a premium deal.
Meanwhile, Apple is waiting in the wings with its own foldable iPhone. Apple seems to be ready to take its time when it comes to launching a foldable phone, perhaps waiting for the technology to become even cheaper and even more reliable.
